Boys Rec FAQs
Welcome to the next chapter of Kelly Post Boys Lacrosse! We’ve listened, learned, and made big changes in 2026 to make lacrosse more affordable, flexible, and community-driven than ever before. Below are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about what's new and what you can expect this season.
About the Program
Boys in Pre-K through 8th grade of all experience levels are welcome. We strive to ensure that every player who wants to participate has a place.
So much — and it’s all built around giving players and families better alignment, flexibility, and opportunities:
-
Lower fees: Registration costs are down nearly 50% — making lacrosse more affordable for every family.
-
Simpler schedule: Streamlined practices and games to better fit busy spring schedules and actually align with TRC Baseball.
-
Closer fields: Our Rec In-House teams (KP Tiny, Ducks, Tyker, Lightning) will return to Dumbarton for practices and games pending Baltimore County Field allocation this winter.
-
New "+" programs: We’ve introduced a “+” program for Tyker and Lightning to help bridge the gap between Rec In-House and Inter-League (Travel) play. Includes an end-of-season tournament with a second weekly practice.
-
New MYLA age groups: We’ve aligned our divisions with the newly updated Maryland Youth Lacrosse Association (MYLA) age group structure. This ensures consistency across the state and provides a clear, seamless path for players as they develop and advance through each level.
-
More community: Kelly Post has always been about people. We’re building stronger connections on and off the field — come be part of it.
-
Rec In-House: Practice and compete locally against other Kelly Post teams. Ideal for development, fun, and lower travel demands. Available for Pre-K through 4th. New this year, there is a "+" program for both Tyker and Lightning that provides an end-of-season tournament and second weekly practice.
-
Rec Inter-League (Travel): Compete against teams from other MYLA councils, with more practices, more games, and regional matchups. Divisions with inter-league offerings include Tyker, Lightning, Mids, and Junior.
-
Club: Highest level of play within Kelly Post. Requires tryouts, more commitment, travel, advanced coaching, and full-season play. Offered for 3rd through 8th (2035 through 2030 grade teams). Year round commitment.
In divisions where both Rec In-House and Rec Inter-League are offered, you can choose the level that fits your player’s interest and readiness.
The number of Rec In-House teams varies each season based on player registration and age division but is typically somewhere between six and ten teams. Our goal is to keep teams balanced and manageable so every player gets plenty of practice and game time.
We will field at least one, but potentially two Rec Inter-League teams per age group (Tyker, Lightning, Mids, Junior). Based on evaluations and the team makeup, teams will be slotted in to one of three MYLA divisions.
MYLA stands for the Maryland Youth Lacrosse Association, the governing body for youth lacrosse across the state. MYLA organizes leagues, tournaments, and age divisions to ensure consistent rules, fair competition, and developmentally appropriate play for all players.
At Kelly Post, our age groups and rules are largely aligned with MYLA (see more via our Program page).
Players in Tyker Travel, Lightning Travel, Mids, and Juniors compete in MYLA play against other local recreation councils in one of three divisions:
Advanced | Experienced players, highest level of competition
- Prior team experience at any level
- Consistent accuracy in catching and throwing
- Comfortable switching hands
- Strong stick skills (passing, shooting, scooping)
- Good field sense and game awareness
- Highly motivated and competitive
Intermediate | Some experienced players, mid-level of competition
- Played at B or C level previously
- Catching/throwing accuracy ranges from average to reasonable
- Can switch hands but needs development
- Solid but still improving stick skills
- Basic field sense and positioning; benefits from more coaching
Developmental | New or emerging players
- Little to no prior lacrosse experience
- Building fundamental stick skills and game awareness
- Emphasis on learning rules, positions, and teamwork
Registration + Costs
Registration is open now! Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration will remain open until February 15. We close registration in mid-February so we can finalize rosters, order uniforms, and prepare team assignments before practices begin in March. This ensures a smooth start to the season and gives our volunteers, coaches, and league coordinators time to get everything ready for your player.
We’ve reduced registration fees by nearly 50% for the 2026 season, passing on the savings directly to our families.
You can review the cost per age group via our Program page.
We’ve removed this membership to give families more flexibility and keep registration costs down. Families who wish to join or renew can still do so directly through USA Lacrosse — but rest assured, appropriate coverage for the season is already provided through TRC.
Tyker+ and Lightning+ players participate in Lax Splash, a regional youth tournament held May 30–31, 2026.
The team registration fee is $1,125, which includes a tournament T-shirt and a three-game minimum. We’re simply passing that cost directly to families — about $55 per player — keeping it as low as possible so every Kelly Post player can experience this exciting event without any surprises down the line.
Players can indicate their interest in Tyker+ / Lightning+ during registration. Families will be invited to attend one of our virtual information sessions this winter, after which players can officially confirm (or decline) participation. The deadline to opt in is February 1, though we may be able to accommodate requests through March, pending roster availability.
Our Travel (Rec Inter-League) teams offer an enhanced experience for players who want a bit more competition and opportunity beyond standard In-House play.
Participation in Travel is optional — families may choose whether to take part, but players must first be registered for Tyker or Lightning to be eligible. We strongly encourage those interested to attend one of our virtual information sessions this winter to ensure alignment and require all Travel players to attend evaluations in late January / early February to ensure proper placement and the appropriate level of competition for every player.
When a player opts in, the previously paid $167 In-House registration is applied toward the total Travel program cost of $250, leaving an additional $83 to cover MYLA league fees, tournament registration, and uniforms.
Schedule + Locations
Our Rec In-House and Rec Inter-League programs, with the exception of KP Tiny, run a full 12-week spring season.
Practices begin the week of March 9, 2026, and games start March 21, running through May 31. The schedule also includes breaks for Spring Break (April 4-5, 2026) and Memorial Day Weekend (May 23-24, 2026).
We designed KP Tiny as an abridged, 8-week season to give our youngest players the best possible experience.
By starting later in April, we avoid the colder, unpredictable early-spring weather and ensure kids are playing in warmer, more consistent conditions. The shorter season also helps keep things fun, focused, and age-appropriate while still giving players plenty of time to learn the game and build confidence.
We’ve scaled back the schedule to make it simpler and more flexible for families. We will also accommodate TRC baseball schedules. The commitment for each is:
- KP Tiny (Pre-K)
- One day / week
- 60 min. practice (weekend)
- Ducks (K - 1st grade)
- One day / week
- 30 min. practice / 30 min. game (weekend)
- Tyker (1st - 2nd grade)
- One practice / week (weekday)
- One game (weekend) | Certified refs
- Tyker+ and Tyker Travel provides a second practice / week and end of season tournament experience for those interested
- Lightning (3rd - 4th grade)
- One practice / week (weekday)
- One game (weekend) | Certified refs
- Lightning+ and Lightning Travel provides a second practice / week and end of season tournament experience for those interested
- Mids (5th - 6th grade)
- Two practices / week (weekday)
- One game (weekend) | Certified refs
- Junior (7th - 8th grade)
- Two practices / week (weekday)
- One game (weekend) | Certified refs
Dumbarton Middle School (300 Dumbarton Rd, Baltimore, MD 21212) has been reinstated as the “home field” for our Rec In-House teams (KP Tiny, Ducks, Tyker, Lightning).
We anticipate that practices and games will be held there, pending field allocation from Baltimore County this winter. Should field availability be an issue, we’ll assign the closest available fields (such as Forge Park) to keep families as close to Dumbarton (and home!) as possible.
Our Rec Inter-League teams will continue to practice and play at Meadowood Regional Park (10650 Falls Rd, Timonium, MD 21093). Travel for away games is based on MYLA division registration but typically includes as far north as Bel Air and Hereford and as far west as Catonsville and Howard County as examples.
Equipment
Sticks are no longer included in registration to give families the flexibility to choose the right stick for their player and to help keep registration costs lower.
A standard-sized lacrosse stick is required for Ducks and above — no fiddlesticks allowed.
For convenience, Kelly Post will offer approved sticks for purchase this winter through select partner vendors for those interested.
Our youngest players learn the basics in a low-contact environment. Full pads aren’t needed at this stage, allowing kids to handle the stick comfortably and focus on fun, skill-building, and confidence.
For Ducks, we encourage the use of gloves for families who want to provide a smoother transition to Tyker, which requires full pads. Gloves are optional and not required for safety.
Lacrosse cleats are recommended but not mandatory for all players, as they provide better grip and stability on grass fields. No metal spikes are allowed.
Turf shoes are suggested for older age groups who consistently practice or play on turf fields, helping prevent slipping and improving comfort.
Everything your player is required to have for a game should also come to practice to include a (full) water bottle.
Coaching, Volunteers & Community
Coaches will include parents and local youth players (high school, college) to mentor, teach, and inspire.
Our success has always been fueled by one thing: dedicated volunteers who step up to make the season possible. From coaches to coordinators, parents to interns — it truly takes a village.
Help us shape your child’s experience, create lasting memories, and keep the Kelly Post tradition alive. Whether you’re a mom, dad, or caregiver, brand new to lacrosse or familiar with the game, there’s a place for you to make an impact and be part of the KP community.
Check out the multitude of volunteer opportunities via our Volunteer page.
