Kelly Post Girls' Lacrosse | New to Lacrosse

Rec registration is now open!

2024 Middies vs WAXKelly Post lacrosse was founded in 1958 and is the oldest youth lacrosse program in America. The club was named in honor of Mark Kelly, a successful University of Maryland goalie who joined the Navy and ultimately lost his life serving during World War II.

Kelly Post girls' lacrosse offers lacrosse for all skill levels, whether a girl has never played to advanced players. Our youngest players are 4 years old, and our oldest are generally eight- and ninth-graders.

While lacrosse is generally considered a spring season sport, Kelly Post has year-round opportunities for girls who want to continue to hone their skills. During the spring, Kelly Post travel teams play in the Maryland Youth Lacrosse Association. Travel teams generally play in at least one summer tournament called Lax Splash. Other opportunities include additional summer tournaments, fall indoor/outdoor leagues and clinics/trainings during all four seasons.

Equipment

Kelly Post will provide each girl with a team shirt. Each girl is expected to bring:

  • their own regulation stick
  • mouth guard
  • protective eyewear
  • water bottle.

Please label all items.

Practices can be cold the first couple weeks; please ensure your daughter is properly dressed with layers & gloves.

Stick

Lacrosse stickThe lacrosse stick (crosse) is one of the most costly pieces of equipment.  Top of the line sticks can cost $200-$300. But your player's first stick does not need to cost that much at all.  It is OK to borrow one or buy a new one. Some beginner sticks cost in the $50-$70 range.

Additionally, the shaft of the stick can be cut down for smaller players. However you may find yourself buying a longer stick next season, and a shaft on its own often costs the same as a whole stick.  Check with older players to see if they have a short shaft you can borrow for a year.

An easy way to improve a beginner stick is to get a custom pocket put in. Most lacrosse stores can do this in a few days. It is an easy way to add value to stick, and they out perform a $200 new stick.
